Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political violence is a significant challenge in many parts of Nigeria, where the use of force, intimidation, and violence during elections and political contests undermine democratic processes and public confidence in government institutions. Yola South LGA in Adamawa State has experienced sporadic political violence, particularly around election periods, which has affected the political environment and governance (Suleiman & Ahmad, 2023). The impact of such violence is often profound, leading to a breakdown in social cohesion, reduced political participation, and diminished trust in government. Public confidence in government is crucial for effective governance, as it influences citizen cooperation with state initiatives and the legitimacy of political leaders (Bala & Uzo, 2024). This study examines how political violence in Yola South LGA has affected public confidence in government institutions, focusing on the perceptions of residents, political actors, and civil society groups regarding the government's ability to maintain peace and ensure fair elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political violence in Yola South LGA has had a detrimental effect on public confidence in government institutions, with citizens increasingly skeptical about the ability of political leaders to maintain law and order. Violent political events not only destabilize the electoral process but also erode trust in the government’s ability to address the needs of the people. The problem is compounded by weak law enforcement and inadequate measures to ensure political stability. This study seeks to explore the extent to which political violence in Yola South LGA has undermined public confidence in government institutions and how this affects governance.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it sheds light on the destructive impact of political violence on public confidence in government and the broader democratic process. By focusing on Yola South LGA, the research will offer a detailed analysis of how political violence undermines governance and political stability. The findings will be useful for policymakers, political leaders, and civil society organizations in addressing the root causes of political violence and improving governance. Moreover, the study will contribute to the discourse on the relationship between political violence, public confidence, and democratic participation in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Yola South LGA in Adamawa State and will focus on the impact of political violence on public confidence in government. The research will involve surveys and interviews with residents, political actors, and local government officials. The study does not extend to other LGAs in Adamawa State or Nigeria. A limitation of the study is the potential for bias in responses, particularly from individuals who have been directly affected by political violence.
